Cummulative Test Retake

Well, we are quickly approaching the end of the first nine weeks of the 2011-2012 school year! Time is flying by!!

Some kids have been asking about retesting options, and we are finally nearing that point in the semester. For Honors Geometry, we allow one cummulative retake every nine weeks. The test will cover all material taught in that nine weeks and be evenly weights across the topics. This particular test will be covering Logic, Points Lines and Planes, Angles, Parallel Lines Properties and Proofs.

The test will be offered next week, Thursday October 13th both before and after school. Ms. Brown will be here from 6:30 – 7:25 to administer the morning test and Mr. Garcia will be here from 2:45 – 3:40 to administer the afternoon session. I will be doing retake tutorials in my room Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning prior to the test. These sessions are not mandatory, but are highly recommended.

If a student would like to retake, they have to print off the document Cumulative Retesting Policy Geo HGT , read it thoroughly, make sure they are eligible, get a signature and bring this with them to the test. Students must let their classroom teacher know by Tuesday at the latest if they are testing so the proper number of copies can be made.

If you have any questions, please let me know. A student is not eligible unless their testing average is below a 75% and the highest the average will be raised to is a 75% after the retest. Please do not sign up if you don’t meet that criteria.

Printing!!

Ohhh, printing costs! They are crazy aren’t they!? You can almost buy a brand new printer for the amount of money you have to spend on ink and paper to keep the things running properly! At CHS and across the district we are certainly feeling the printing costs of teaching. Providing worksheets for kids to help them be better educated is becoming something we are having a hard time affording. That is why we have been trying to use the online learning world as an alternative for printing notes and homework sheets for kids to use during class. In the math department we have been posting kids homework on course websites so they can access the work without it ever having been printed. I just wanted all parents and students to be aware that the idea is to SAVE PRINTING COSTS not drive them up! Please don’t feel like just because a worksheet has been posted you are required to print it. I encourage all students to treat these online resource as you would a textbook. Just copy the problems onto a separate sheet of notebook paper and work them out there. For Geometry that can mean doing a lot of drawing, but with practice by the end of the year you’ll be an expert! 🙂

We all have to work together to make these budget cuts bearable. I in no way want to push the costs of teaching onto parents, so students, please step up and start copying that work!! In return, I promise to copy as many worksheets as I can for you.

As usual, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Oh, and your grades are updated in Skyward for the 6 week progress report. Happy grade checking!

Problems with Compatibility? Try these quick fixes!

Some students have come to me with problems printing from the site. Here are few problems you might be experiencing and some quick fixes to hopefully help you print with ease!

1. You have a Mac – If you have Mac you shouldn’t have any trouble opening files. MS Word files are compatible between both platforms. However, some kids have mentioned this causing them some trouble. You need to make sure you are opening the files in TextEdit, and it should work just fine. Here is a site that can help explain the in’s and out’s and hopefully give you some answers. http://mactips.info/2005/10/open-word-into-textedit

2. You don’t have MS Word – This is a costly thing…for sure! So if you don’t have the program already installed on your computer, you still have some (free!) options for opening documents. One option you have is something called Open Office. You can download this for free from this site http://download.openoffice.org/other.html. Just scroll down until you find English and then download the one that fits your operating system. If you have trouble, let me know! 🙂 This program will allow you to open the files, even if you never use it for word processing.

3. You have MS Word, but it wont read the math symbols – Ok, this is an easy fix. All you need to do is enable MathType on your computer. This comes with MS Word and can be found by installing the disc and enabling the file. But, if you’re like me you do not have your install disk and so you’ll need another route. You can download MathType as a free trial for 30 days. At the end of the 30 days it reverts to MathType Lite but will still open the files with no problem. Unless you are typing out complicated math documents, then you’ll be fine with the lite version. Here is the site that offers the free download. http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathtype/

Ok, so far that’s all I have come up with. If any of you find any other problems, let me know by posting a comment here and sharing your insights. We can all learn how to fix this together 🙂

Welcome Back Rangers! 2011-2012 School Year

Hello Everyone and welcome to Geometry at Clements High School! As the school year quickly approaches, I am filled with a sense of hope for the upcoming year. I hope that everyone’s summer was happy and healthy and relaxing! I hope that everyone is excited to be back to learning. But most of all I hope that this year can be better than any before for learning and working with Geometry!

I really want to spend this year exploring the use of technology in the classroom. I am currently working on my Master’s in Educational Technology and for that reason and many others, it’s going to be important to me to try to bring to life the many possibilities that we have at our finger tips with the technology we already posses. Students can look forward to getting to know different programs, watching videos, creating presentations and most importantly sharing what they already know with their classmates. I look forward to getting to know all of you and can’t wait for the year to begin!

  • Now, I have a few links that I’d like to make you aware of. First here is a link to my online course syllabus that has everything you’ll need to know to be successful in my class. It’s a Prezi presentation and is filled with links to important documents. You can refer to it any time you need a reminder for the course!

                                                                                                      Interactive Syllabus

  • Another thing I’d like everyone to do is fill out the parent survey. Students, you can do this for your parents or they can do it themselves. If you fill this out, your name goes to a spread sheet and I’ll give you a free homework pass you can use on any homework assignment you’d like this year! I’ll remind you about this first week of school too!

Parent Survey for Free Homework Pass

  • Lastly, I’d like everyone to look up in the right corner of this website and subscribe. That way, anytime I update the site, you’ll get an e-mail in your inbox letting you know what’s going on!

Ok! That should be it for now. If anyone has any questions, please comment here or e-mail Lindsay.harris@fortbendisd.com

I am looking forward to a great year!
